Jason Sanjay has revealed why he chose not to share the full script of his directorial debut, Sigma, with his father, actor Vijay.
The film stars Sundeep Kishan as a rogue radio host who becomes involved in a treasure hunt and finds himself caught up in a $52 million underworld racket.
Jason explained that he only shared the basic outline of the story with Vijay and his grandfather, filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar. He wanted them to watch the finished movie without knowing every detail beforehand.
Jason wanted Vijay to experience Sigma as a viewer
Rather than giving his father the complete script, Jason allowed him to see the story unfold on screen like any other audience member.
He said Vijay is usually quiet when responding to questions and can take around 10 seconds before answering. Jason even jokes about the silence during their phone calls, asking, “Did you cut the call, Appa?”
Jason expects his father to be proud of Sigma after watching the finished film.
Vijay’s films influenced Jason
Growing up as Vijay’s son also meant that his father’s movies became part of Jason’s childhood.
He recalled watching Pokkiri repeatedly and said he was particularly drawn to Vijay’s costumes and hairstyle. Jason even copied some of his father’s looks and took pictures.
Despite being surrounded by constant attention because of his father, Jason said he tries to stay away from the chatter surrounding Vijay. He also remains conscious of his own actions and avoids doing anything he feels could be inconsiderate or offensive.
With Sigma, Jason is now stepping into the industry on his own terms while carrying the influence of one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars.
