DAYS AFTER the death of Khalistan leader Avtar Singh Kandha in a hospital in the UK, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, chief of the Khalistan Tiger Force, was shot dead by two unidentified men in the parking lot of a gurdwara in Surrey, Canada, on Sunday (18) evening. He was also the head of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Sahib.

Nijjar, 46, was a native of Bhar Singh Pura village in Jalandhar in the Indian state of Punjab. He was known for being actively involved in operationalising and financing members of the KTF, media reports said citing officials.

He was also accused in a case registered by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA). Associated with Sikh For Justice, Nijjar also went to Australia recently for a referendum voting, The Indian Express reported.

The report also said that during the probe, it was found that Nijjar had issued incriminating statements and posted objectionable content besides sharing controversial videos and photographs on social media platforms to “spread insurrectionary imputations”.

Nijjar’s name had also featured in a wanted list handed over by former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh to Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau when he visited India five years ago.

The slain leader was also facing charges in a number of cases registered and being investigated by the police in Punjab and a red-corner notice was issued against him.
