Bollywood director Karan Johar recently shared a glimpse of his conversation with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway while promoting The Devil Wears Prada 2.
In the video, Karan told the actors that he has been channeling Miranda Priestly in his own career, repeating her iconic lines and judging people’s shoes. He also said he has watched the original film around 200 times.
Meryl Streep told Karan Johar that while Miranda may not be the ideal role model as a boss, she took her job seriously and treated people with respect. Karan also spoke with the actors about dealing with nostalgia as they return to the sequel 20 years later.
Meryl Streep revealed that discussions for a sequel began three years after the first film, but it took time for the writer to develop the right concept. She said that returning to play Miranda now feels “right.”
She also shared that despite playing one of fashion’s most iconic characters, she was never personally interested in fashion.
“I was never interested in it, honestly. I was interested in costume."
She explained that she has a degree in costume design and views clothing as a way to express character. She added that her interest was not in fashion as a trend, but in how it becomes part of a person’s life.
Karan Johar later shared his experience on Instagram, writing, “From quoting their iconic dialogues in everyday conversations to sitting across them…some moments don’t feel real until you’re in them! To be in conversation with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, discussing everything about fashion, the changing times, the advent of social media and how it shaped the script of their upcoming film, I left enriched with their perspective towards their craft and cinema."
He added, “These ladies are absolutely a pleasure to watch on screen, but I can safely say now, they are even more wonderful when you’re meeting them off-screen. Signing off as an ardent watcher of the part one of the movie and the one to come…and of course, the most ardent fan of Meryl Streep. ICON!🙌"
Twenty years after their original performances, Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci return to their roles in the sequel set in New York City and the offices of Runway magazine.
The film also features new cast members, including Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, B. J. Novak, and others. Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman also return to their original roles.
The film is directed by David Frankel and written by Aline Brosh McKenna. It is set to release in theaters on May 1, 2026.
