Modi expresses deep concerns over Brazil riots: ‘Democratic traditions must be respected’

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on Monday (9) expressed concerns over the riots in Brazil and extended support to government authorities, underlining that “democratic traditions must be respected by everyone”.

In a tweet, he said, “Deeply concerned about the news of rioting and vandalism against the State institutions in Brasilia. Democratic traditions must be respected by everyone. We extend our full support to the Brazilian authorities.”

Modi tagged Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil who assumed office for the second term on the first day of 2023.

Modi’s words came hours after hundreds of supporters of the Latin American nation’s former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the national Congress, presidential palace and the country’s supreme court.

President Lula, 77, condemned the riots as “fascist” attacks.

Bolsonaro, who Lula replaced, denied any role in the violence and criticised the “pillaging and invasions”.

Lula, who is a left-wing leader, beat Bolsonaro in a bitterly polarising October elections in Brazil.

Hardline supporters of the latter have staged protests outside army bases, seeking a military intervention to prevent Lula from taking over the office.

Bolsonaro rubbished Lula’s “baseless” accusations that he incited the riots.

Writing on Twitter, the former president — who left Brazil for Florida in the US — also defended the right to “peaceful protests”.
