It seems there is no end to personal attacks this political season in the UK when the country is set to choose its next prime minister between Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak.

Two British cabinet ministers, who have backed Truss for the premiership, have accused Sunak of resisting attempts to bring down red tapism post Brexit. According to chief secretary to treasury Simon Clarke and business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng, the former finance minister “dug his heels in” on reforms that were possible only after the UK exited the European Union (EU).

According to The Telegraph, UK, the two ministers said Sunak disagreed to repeal the EU’s Solvency II rule, making it challenging for Britain to invest pension funds in projects related to infrastructure and the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill.

However, sources in Sunak’s camp denied the allegations calling them “categorically wrong”. They countered that Sunak backed the idea of challenging the EU over changing Northern Ireland’s trading terms unilaterally.

The two cabinet ministers also told The Telegraph, “Rishi has given up. He wants people to fear there is no alternative to sliding into recession and that the only option is to stem the bleeding with Labour-lite economic policy.”

The fresh charges against Sunak came up after he said that he would provide more aid to the most vulnerable sections of the country in the middle of the cost-of-living crisis.

Truss, on the other hand, promised tax cuts and accused Sunak of trying to impose “Gordon Brown style politics”.

She has also rejected requests made by business leaders suggesting that she come together with outgoing prime minister Boris Johnson and Sunak on addressing the cost-of-living crisis.
