Robert Downey Jr. is once again making Marvel history with a reported $100 million payday for his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor is set to play Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, marking one of the biggest superhero movie deals ever reported.
The massive paycheck shows how much Downey Jr.'s value has grown since he first entered the MCU as Tony Stark in Iron Man (2008). Over the years, his salary has increased from a modest starting amount to record-breaking figures, helped by the success of the franchise and a deal that included backend profit participation.
Downey Jr.'s first Marvel appearance came with Iron Man, where he reportedly earned around $500,000. After the film became a global success and transformed him into a franchise leader, his earnings increased significantly. For Iron Man 2 (2010), his reported paycheck rose to around $10 million.
The turning point came with The Avengers (2012). As Tony Stark became the face of the MCU, Downey Jr. reportedly earned about $50 million, including salary and backend compensation. His earnings continued to climb with Iron Man 3 (2013), where reports estimate he made around $75 million.
For Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), his reported earnings were between $40 million and $50 million, followed by around $40 million for Captain America: Civil War (2016). Even his shorter appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) reportedly brought him around $15 million.
By the time Marvel reached its biggest crossover events, Downey Jr. had become one of Hollywood's most valuable stars. He reportedly earned around $75 million for both Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), thanks to his importance in the franchise and his profit-sharing arrangement.
Now, after closing Tony Stark's chapter in Avengers: Endgame, Downey Jr. is entering a completely new phase as Doctor Doom. His reported $100 million deal for two Avengers films places him at the top of Marvel's salary ladder once again.
Across his MCU journey, which includes three Iron Man films, four Avengers movies, Captain America: Civil War, and appearances in The Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man: Homecoming, Downey Jr. has reportedly earned more than $500 million.
The latest Doctor Doom deal is not just a paycheck. It represents Marvel's continued belief in the actor who helped build the franchise into a global phenomenon.
