  • The original live-action series ended in December 2025

For fans who thought their journey through Hawkins was finally over, Netflix has delivered an unexpected reason to return.

The original Stranger Things may have reached its conclusion, but the supernatural world created by the Duffer Brothers is continuing. Netflix has confirmed that Stranger Things: Tales from '85 will return for a second season on September 17, bringing Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and the rest of the Hawkins gang back for a new paranormal mystery.

The announcement comes just months after the animated spin-off debuted, giving fans a surprisingly quick return to the Stranger Things universe.

Hawkins is calling again

Set between the events of Seasons 2 and 3 of the original series, Tales from '85 follows the Hawkins Investigators Club as they face another supernatural threat.

The animated series offers a fresh take on the franchise, using the visual style of an 1980s Saturday morning cartoon while retaining the eerie atmosphere that made Stranger Things a global phenomenon.

Season 1 premiered on Netflix on April 23, 2026, and quickly climbed the streaming charts. Netflix renewed the series for a second season just five days after its debut.

The rapid renewal suggested that work on the next chapter was already well underway, helping explain why fans won't have to endure the long waits that became synonymous with the original series.

What happens in Season 2

The new season picks up after the events of the first, with Hawkins once again facing an invasion of strange supernatural forces.

According to the official synopsis, mysterious “ghostly” apparitions and a swarm of hate sprites begin causing chaos across the town. The Hawkins Investigators Club must uncover what is happening before another gate to the Upside Down can be opened.

And the threat is not limited to familiar territory.

Series creator Eric Robles previously teased that the new episodes will explore parts of Hawkins that the franchise has never visited before, including a mysterious mine.

The story will also mix the supernatural chaos with more ordinary teenage problems, with Valentine's Day approaching as the young characters attempt to navigate their increasingly bizarre lives.

Stranger Things is still expanding

The return of Tales from '85 comes after the main Stranger Things story concluded with its series finale, “Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up,” in December 2025.

The finale brought the long-running live-action story to an end after 42 episodes, closing the chapter on the original Hawkins adventure.

But Netflix has made it clear that the end of the main series does not mean the end of the franchise.

With Tales from '85 exploring a previously unseen period in the characters' lives, the animated series gives fans another way to revisit the world without undoing the ending of the original show.

Season 2 arrives on Netflix on September 17, meaning fans will be back in Hawkins before they've had much time to miss it.
