Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson’s Verity will be released in Indian theaters with an adults-only rating after the film underwent cuts by the country’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The psychological thriller, directed by Michael Showalter, was cleared by the CBFC on September 29, ahead of its October 2 theatrical release.
Why Verity was cut in India
According to reports, the CBFC’s Examining Committee asked the filmmakers to modify intimate visuals and remove explicit footage from the movie.
A total of 23 seconds was reportedly cut, with much of the removed footage coming from an intimate make-out sequence involving Hathaway and Johnson.
The board also required anti-smoking and anti-alcohol warnings to appear where applicable. A visual showing an e-cigarette was removed, while the name of a medicine brand was blurred.
Following the changes, the film has a final runtime of 118 minutes and 41 seconds. Paid previews are scheduled to begin in India on October 1.
What is Verity about?
Based on Colleen Hoover’s 2018 novel, Verity follows Lowen Ashleigh, played by Johnson, a struggling writer who is hired to complete the bestselling book series of injured author Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway.
Lowen moves into the Crawford family home to research the unfinished books. Her stay takes a disturbing turn when she discovers a hidden manuscript containing shocking revelations about Verity’s past.
Josh Hartnett also stars in the film.
Verity is scheduled to open in Indian theaters on October 2.
