NAVJOT Singh Sidhu, the cricketer-turned-politician from the northern Indian state of Punjab, on Friday (5) said that he has taken back his resignation as the president of the state unit of the Indian National Congress.

Sidhu, who is known for courting controversies, stepped down from the post on September 28, days after former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh quit amid internal trouble in the party. Sidhu took over as the president in July following a prolonged turmoil in the state unit of the party. Sidhu is known to have sour relation with Captain Singh who has now quit the Congress to form his own party – the Punjab Lok Congress – months ahead of the next state elections in 2022.

Punjab drama: Sidhu quits as state Congress chief

‘Will take charge the day a new advocate general is appointed’

“I have taken back my resignation (as Punjab Congress chief) and I categorically state that the day a new advocate general will be appointed and a new panel will come, I will take charge of my office. It was not any personal ego,” the 58-year-old Sidhu said in a press conference in Chandigarh.

Sidhu had quit for he was reportedly upset over the party’s bureaucratic set-up and allegations that his commands were not being followed following the expansion of the state cabinet.

Sidhu also openly challenged Channi during his Friday press conference saying his party’s chief ministerial face for the next elections will be decided by the “people” and not the party. He also questioned the actions that Channi has taken in his tenure as the chief minister so far.
