Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel visited BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville, New Jersey, on Saturday (22), during his US visit connected to the Vibrant Gujarat initiative.
Patel was welcomed by Pujya Brahmaviharidas Swami and Pujya Nilkanthsevadas Swami. He was accompanied by senior Gujarat government officials, including the additional chief secretary of the Finance Department, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Principal Secretary to the chief minister, and Vikrant Pandey, secretary to the chief minister.
During his visit, Patel praised Akshardham for presenting India’s spiritual and cultural heritage to an international audience. He said preserving cultural values among the Indian diaspora was important and commended BAPS for promoting India’s traditions through its activities in the United States and elsewhere.
Patel also toured the Akshardham Museum, which is under construction at the site. The museum is expected to feature 12 architectural replicas, 40 multimedia presentations, 85 immersive dioramas and 200 lifelike statues. Organizers say it will explore India’s heritage and culture while presenting themes including faith, harmony, compassion, family values and selfless service.
Pujya Brahmaviharidas Swami said Patel was impressed by the scale and craftsmanship of the mandir and touched by its peaceful environment. During the museum tour, Patel remarked, “You brought India’s ancient culture back to life.”
A major part of the visit was Patel’s interaction with BAPS volunteers. He praised their discipline, humility, hospitality and commitment to seva, or selfless service, saying their efforts have helped make Akshardham a destination for visitors from around the world.
“From my heart, I thank all the BAPS volunteers for their contributions to the construction of Akshardham, which will inspire many generations to come,” Patel said. He added that visitors from around the world would find peace at the site.
Patel’s US visit marks the first trip to the country by a Gujarat chief minister in nearly 30 years. While the trip is focused on the Vibrant Gujarat initiative, he said his visit to Akshardham demonstrated that “India’s culture is vibrant” there as well.
The visit also brought together U.S.-based delegates and community leaders. BAPS has programs spanning education, humanitarian relief, health care, environmental awareness, youth development and cultural activities in Gujarat, India and communities worldwide.
