At only 15 years old, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has transformed the 2026 cricket season with a series of historic batting performances. The left-handed opening batter from Bihar became one of the biggest stars in world cricket after an extraordinary season with the Rajasthan Royals.
Sooryavanshi broke Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for the most sixes in a single IPL season. He smashed 65 sixes during the tournament, surpassing Gayle’s previous record of 59 sixes set in 2012.
His achievement also became the highest number of sixes hit by any player in a single T20 tournament anywhere in the world.
The young batter scored 680 runs during the IPL season. With that total, he became the first teenager in history to score more than 600 runs in a single T20 tournament.
Sooryavanshi also broke the IPL record for the most runs scored by an uncapped player in one season.
His aggressive batting style helped him reach 400 runs in just 167 balls. That made him the fastest player to achieve the milestone in IPL history, surpassing several well-known power hitters, including Andre Russell.
The Rajasthan Royals opener also dominated during the IPL playoffs. In the Eliminator match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he blasted 97 runs and hit 12 sixes. That innings set a new record for the most sixes in an IPL playoff innings, breaking Shubman Gill’s earlier record of 10 sixes.
During the same playoff innings, Sooryavanshi reached his half-century in only 16 balls. That performance matched Suresh Raina’s record for the fastest fifty in IPL playoff history, first achieved in 2014.
His performances during the powerplay overs also created new records.
Sooryavanshi scored 490 runs during the first six overs across the season. He broke David Warner’s 2016 record of 467 powerplay runs in a single IPL season.
Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he also smashed eight sixes during the powerplay overs alone, setting another IPL record.
The teenager became the first player in IPL history to hit 10 or more sixes in an innings three separate times in a single season.
Before his IPL success, Sooryavanshi had already made headlines in youth international cricket.
He broke the world record for the highest number of career sixes in Under-19 international cricket.
He also delivered a remarkable performance in the 2026 ICC Under-19 World Cup final against England. In the title match, he scored 175 runs from just 80 balls and guided India to the championship.
His innings became the highest individual score ever recorded in an Under-19 World Cup final.
From youth cricket to the IPL, Sooryavanshi’s record-breaking performances have turned him into one of the most talked-about players in the sport. His 2026 season rewrote several batting records and established him as one of the most explosive hitters in T20 cricket.
