A RESURGENT India earned their second successive victory in women’s hockey at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics in as many days to keep hopes for making the quarter-finals alive. The women in blue on Saturday (31) beat South Africa 4-3 in their final match of Pool A to end up at No.4 with six points.

They will now closely watch the outcome of the match between Great Britain and Ireland, the final game of the group, and pray for the Irish team’s loss. Ireland, who the Indian eves defeated 1-0 on Friday (30), have three points from four games and a win for them will also take them to six points. India have a worse goal difference (minus seven) than Ireland (minus five) which could become the deciding factor if both teams end up on same points.

Both women’s & men’s team win in hockey

Coming back to Saturday’s game played at the Oi Hockey Stadium in Tokyo, Rani Rampal’s side was determined to produce the best with Vandana Katariya scoring a hat-trick. She became the first Indian woman to score a hat-trick at the Olympics. The South African side, which ended with no wins at this Olympic, returned in the game from being a goal down three times but India eventually had the last laugh by scoring the winner in the fourth quarter. Neha Goyal was the other scorer for India. The winning goal came from Katariya.

For South Africa, Tarryn Glasby scored two goals and Erin Hunter one.
