A CAREER-BEST four-for by seamer Prasidh Krishna on Wednesday (9) helped India defeat the West Indies by 44 runs in the second one-day international at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in the western state of Gujarat to clinch the three-match series.

Chasing 238 to level the series, the Caribbeans faced a batting collapse and could never recover despite a late surge. They were bowled out for 193 with four overs to spare after getting reduced to 5 for 76 at one stage.

Nicholas Pooran, who captained the West Indies for the match in the place of an injured Kieron Pollard, won the toss and sent Rohit Sharma’s side to bat first.

The Indians were reeling at 43 for 3 in 12 overs when KL Rahul (49), who came back into the playing XI after missing the first match, and Suryakumar Yadav (64) added 91 runs for the fourth wicket. The pair was broken when Rahul got run out. Washington Sundar made 24 and Deepak Hooda, who is playing in his debut international series, made 29 to help the Indian total reach 237 for 9 in 50 overs. Sharma fell for only five while former captain Virat Kohli made 18.

For the visitors, pacers Alzarri Joseph and Odean Smith scalped two wickets each. Kemar Roach, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein and Fabian Allen got one wicket each.

During the chase, West Indies openers Shai Hope (27) and Brandon King (18) put on 32 runs but Krishna led India’s fightback as he dismissed King (18) and Darren Bravo (1) in quick succession. Hope was dismissed by spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and captain Pooran (9) and Holder (2) also fell quickly, leaving their side’s chase in tatters.

Shamarh Brooks (44) and Hosein (34) added 41 runs for the sixth wicket but as soon as Windies innings started coming back on track, Hooda picked up his maiden one-day wicket which was in the form of Brooks. Hosein, Odean Smith (24) and Fabien Allen (13) also chipped in, but in the end the target proved too much for the wagging tail.

For the Indians, Shardul Thakur picked two wickets while Mohammed Siraj and Chahal got one apiece besides Krishna’s 4 for 12.

Krishna was picked as the player of the match.

India won the first match of the series on Sunday (6) by six wickets.

The final match of the series will be played at the same venue on Friday (11).
