1st one-day: India sport black armbands to honour Lata Mangeshkar

INDIA on Sunday (6) took the field against the West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad for their 1,000th one-day international match. However, the historic occasion was somberly affected by the death of legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar at a hospital in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The Indian cricket team led by Rohit Sharma sported a black armband as a tribute to India’s Nightingale who was 92.

“The Indian Cricket Team is wearing black armbands today to pay their respects to Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar Ji who left for her heavenly abode on Sunday morning. The queen of melody, Lata didi loved cricket, always supported the game, and backed Team India,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a tweet.

Earlier, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said that the Indian players would wear black armbands to condole Mangeshkar’s demise.

Mangeshkar was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on January 8 after she was diagnosed with Covid-19 and pneumonia. She had recovered from the disease but was put on ventilator support after her condition deteriorated on Saturday (5).

A two-day national mourning was announced by sources in the Indian government during which the National Flag will fly at half mast for two days. She would also be given a state funeral on Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, India put the West Indies in a spot after Sharma won the toss and asked Kieron Pollard’s team to bat first. The visitors lost their first three batters for only 63 on board with all-rounder Washington Sundar picking two of them in his comeback game.

India created history by becoming the first team in the world to play 1,000th match in the 50-over format.
