SPINNER Yuzvendra Chahal claimed four wickets while captain Rohit Sharma slammed a fifty as India defeated the West Indies by six wickets in the first match of the three-game one-day international series at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in the western state of Gujarat on Sunday (6).

India reached the target of 177 runs in 28 overs losing four wickets after the West Indies were all out for 176 in 43.5 overs. The victory was special as it was India’s 1,000th game in the one-day format.

The Caribbeans failed to shine with the bat after Sharma won the toss in his comeback game and elected to bowl. Chahal rattled the visitors’ middle-order just when they were trying to rebuild the innings after the initial fall of wickets and Kieron Pollard’s side lost four wickets for just eight runs to reel at 79 for 7 in the 23rd over.

It took a half-century from Jason Holder (57 off 71 balls) at No.7 and 29 from Fabian Allen off 43 deliveries that took them past 150. The duo added 78 runs for the eighth wicket when Washington Sundar broke the partnership. The West Indies were eventually bowled out for 176 runs. Apart from Chahal’s four, Sundar took three wickets, Prasidh Krishna got two and Mohammed Siraj one.

The hosts were off to a great start and raced to 67 in 10 overs without losing a wicket. India lost their first wicket on 84 when Alzarri Joseph dismissed Rohit Sharma (60 off 51 balls) and former captain Virat Kohli (eight off four) quickly. Ishan Kishan (28 off 36), the other opening batter was the next to go and with wicket-keeper-batter Rishabh Pant (11 off nine) getting run out soon, the visitors tried to put the pressure back on India’s shoulders.

But Suryakumar Yadav (34 not out off 36) and debutant Deepak Hooda (26 not out off 32) took India over the line comfortably as the asking rate was never a concern. Akeal Hosein was the only other successful bowler for the West Indies other than Joseph.

Chahal was adjudged the player of the match.

The next match of the series will be played at the same venue on Wednesday (9).

Brief scores: West Indies 176 all out in 43.5 overs (Jason Holder 57; Yuzvendra Chahal 4-49, Washington Sundar 3-30) vs India 178/4 in 28 overs (Rohit Sharma 60, Suryakumar Yadav 34; Alzarri Joseph 2-1)
