Karan Johar marked a major milestone by becoming the first Indian filmmaker to attend the Met Gala. His presence at the prestigious event signaled a growing global recognition of Indian cinema and fashion. Walking the iconic steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Johar represented not just himself but a broader cultural narrative from India.
For his debut, Johar wore a custom ensemble designed by Manish Malhotra. The outfit was inspired by the works of legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma. Featuring intricate detailing, hand-painted motifs, and traditional embroidery, the look translated classical Indian art into a modern, wearable form, aligning perfectly with the “Fashion Is Art” theme.
During an interview, Johar spoke emotionally about his close bond with Shah Rukh Khan, who attended the Met Gala in 2025. Reflecting on their journey, he said, “Well, for me it’s so emotional. Shah Rukh is such a large part of my career repertoire. I’ve done my first five films with him and he’s the reason I stand here today. So for him to have come last year and me this year, it’s like life feels like a complete circle.”
Johar and Shah Rukh Khan’s partnership has shaped Bollywood over the decades. Their collaborations include films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and My Name Is Khan. These projects established them as one of the industry’s most successful actor-director duos.
Johar later shared an emotional note, describing his Met Gala debut as a “full circle” moment. He highlighted how the experience went beyond fashion, focusing on storytelling and cultural representation. His collaboration with Manish Malhotra, built over 30 years, added depth to the moment. The look, widely praised online, stood out for its intricate craftsmanship and the way Johar carried it confidently on a global stage, earning admiration from both fans and industry peers.
