WHILE the captain in Virat Kohli has not the best of times in T20 cricket, the batsman in him witnessed a moment of glory on Sunday (26) when he became the first Indian batsman to complete 10,000 runs in the shortest format during his side Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) game against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

Kohli, 32, is the second man after West Indian Chris Gayle to reach the landmark in both T20 and one-day international (ODI) cricket. In Tests, Sunil Gavaskar is the first Indian to complete 10,000 runs while in ODIs, Sachin Tendulkar is the first to do so.

The ace batsman completed 10,000 runs in T20s when he was on 13 in the game. He went on to score 51, his second successive fifty in the tournament, as RCB hammered MI by 54 runs after the latter saw a dramatic collapse while chasing 166 to win.

Could Kohli lose RCB captaincy midway in IPL 2021?

Kohli now has 10,038 runs from 314 T20 games at an average of 41.65, with 3,159 of those coming while playing for India. He has slammed five hundreds in the T20s – all of which came for the RCB – besides 74 fifties.

Sunday’s win saw RCB maintain their third rank in the points table with a tally of 12 in 10 matches. It was their first win after the tournament resumed on September 19. They lost to Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings in their previous games.

Defending champions Mumbai, on the other hand, slumped to their third successive defeat after the resumption and now are at the seventh position with eight points from 10 games.
