Surveillance footage could prove the innocence of Indian-American engineer Mahendra Patel, 56, who has been accused of attempting to kidnap a two-year-old child at a Walmart in Georgia, USA. Patel has been behind bars at Cobb County Jail for weeks without bond following the alleged incident on March 18, 2025.
According to reports from ABC News, Caroline Miller, the mother of the toddler, claimed that Patel tried to snatch her son during a shopping trip. Miller told WSB that Patel initially approached her family asking where he could find Tylenol. "When I pointed my arm out this way to point to the direction of where it was, that is when he reached down, put both of his hands on Jude, and grabbed him out of my lap," she said, describing the encounter as a "tug of war" for her child.
However, Patel has consistently maintained that he had no intention of kidnapping the child. Speaking through his attorney, Ashleigh Merchant, Patel stated he was merely trying to assist when he noticed the child losing his balance.
Merchant shared Walmart’s CCTV footage with Fox News, which appears to back Patel’s version of events. "You can see where Mr. Patel enters the store. You can see where he first encounters Ms. Miller," Merchant said. "You can’t see this tug-of-war or grabbing back and forth. You can see him lean in, and it’s very likely he was doing what he said — which is to keep the child from falling."
The surveillance video reportedly shows Patel calmly walking past Miller and later pointing out the Tylenol section to her. Importantly, Miller is seen giving Patel a thumbs-up gesture a few minutes later—an action that seems inconsistent with her claim of a kidnapping attempt.
Despite this evidence, Miller approached a Walmart employee about five minutes after the incident to allege that Patel had tried to kidnap her son, later notifying the police. The accusation resulted in Patel’s immediate arrest and charges of attempted kidnapping.
According to the Daily Mail, Patel has repeatedly expressed that he was wrongfully accused, and the footage now gaining attention may help prove his innocence. His case highlights the troubling reality of how misunderstandings or misinterpretations can lead to devastating legal consequences, especially for minority communities.
While Patel remains detained, his defense team hopes the emerging video evidence will lead to his exoneration. His supporters argue that a closer review of the surveillance footage and the context of the interaction are crucial in determining the truth.
The incident has sparked broader conversations about quick judgments, racial profiling, and the need for clear evidence before serious charges are filed. As Patel awaits further legal proceedings, many are watching closely to see if justice will ultimately be served.
