The bodies of eight Indian nationals who lost their lives in a devastating industrial accident at Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City have been returned to India, bringing the total number of repatriated victims to 12, according to the Indian Embassy in Doha.
The latest repatriation took place on June 26, one day after the remains of four other Indian victims were flown home.
“Mortal remains of 8 Indian nationals who unfortunately passed away in Ras Laffan accident have been repatriated to India on June 26. 4 out of 12 mortal remains had been repatriated on June 25,” the Indian Embassy in Doha posted on X on Friday night.
The deadly explosion occurred at the Barzan local gas supply facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City, a major energy hub operated by QatarEnergy LNG. The blast claimed the lives of 13 people, including 12 Indian nationals and one Pakistani citizen, making it one of the most significant industrial accidents involving foreign workers in Qatar in recent years.
In addition to the fatalities, the explosion left 66 people injured. Those hurt included citizens of Qatar, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Qatari authorities and emergency responders transported the injured to nearby medical facilities, where they continue to receive treatment.
The Indian Embassy expressed appreciation to the Qatari government, Indian community organizations, and government agencies in India for their swift coordination in returning the victims' remains and supporting their families during the difficult process.
Ambassador Vipul, accompanied by embassy officials, also traveled to Al Khor on Friday to meet Indian nationals recovering from injuries sustained in the explosion. The visit was intended to assess their condition and offer support on behalf of the Indian government.
“The injured have all received appropriate medical attention for which the Embassy thanks Qatari authorities and employer company representatives,” it said.
Authorities have not yet released detailed findings on the cause of the explosion, and investigations into the incident are expected to continue. Meanwhile, diplomatic and local officials remain focused on assisting victims, ensuring medical care for the injured, and providing support to families affected by the tragedy.
