Three people were killed and at least four others, including a toddler, were wounded in a shooting near Seattle's Space Needle on Sunday (26), police said, adding that one suspect had been arrested and another was being sought.
The shooting occurred around 6 pm local time at the Seattle Center during the annual Bite of Seattle food festival, a popular summer event celebrating local businesses and food vendors.
Assistant police chief Tyrone Davis said investigators believed "there were two people who we believe were shooting at each other." Police recovered two weapons from the scene.
"There is no outstanding threat to the community," Davis told reporters.
Seattle police said three people died in the shooting. Four others were taken to Harborview Medical Center, where they were being treated for their injuries.
Hospital spokesperson Susan Gregg said the patients included a child, a woman of unknown age who was undergoing surgery, a 23-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman. Davis said those hospitalized were in stable condition.
Washington governor Bob Ferguson said State Patrol SWAT officers had been deployed to assist local authorities.
"My prayers are with the families of the victims, and the responders as they work to keep people safe," Ferguson said in a post on X.
Seattle mayor Katie Wilson described the shooting as "an act of horrific violence."
"Our attention belongs to the people whose lives were taken, those fighting to recover, and the families beside them," Wilson said in a statement, thanking Seattle police officers who responded to the scene and arrested one suspect.
Witnesses told Seattle television station KIRO they heard multiple gunshots before fleeing the area.
"At first, I thought there were fireworks, and then everybody flooded and ran past us," witness Nick Bate told the station.
Another witness told AFP: "We started running. I didn't know. I didn't look where the person was going. I just heard everything."
Police continue to search for a second suspect.
