Rahkeem Cornwall on Thursday (6) held high the Caribbean tradition of big-hitting in T20 cricket by slamming a double hundred in the format off just 77 balls in a US-based league.
Playing for Atlanta Fire in the Atlanta Open, the 29-year-old burly six-and-half-feet tall batter belted 17 fours and as many as 22 sixes during his knock to power his team to a mammoth 326 for 1 in 20 overs against Square Drive.
The opponents could manage only 154 to lose by 172 runs.
It was the first-ever double century in T20 cricket and in achieving the feat, Cornwall eclipsed fellow West Indian Chris Gayle who had the record of the highest score in the format so far -- 175 not out off 66 balls which he had belted in an Indian Premier League match in Bengaluru in 2013.
The tournament in the US features 16 teams that are divided into four groups. The winners will pocket a prize money of $75,000.
Interestingly, Cornwall has so far represented the West Indies in Tests only and is yet to make his white-ball debut internationally.
His double century will, however, not be considered in the record books since the Atlanta Open is not recognised by the International Cricket Council and the 'Universe Boss' still officially holds the record for the highest T20 international score for an individual.
