A routine football practice in Arkansas turned into a frightening wildlife encounter when a Maumelle High School player discovered that a venomous snake had been hiding inside his helmet.
The incident happened Thursday (6), during practice at Maumelle High School. The player had already completed warmups when he noticed something unusual moving inside his helmet. He took the equipment to an assistant coach, who inspected it and discovered a roughly 2-foot-long cottonmouth tucked behind the padding.
The player had reportedly been wearing the helmet for nearly an hour before the snake was discovered. Despite the close encounter, he was not bitten.
Chris Davis, director of Maumelle Animal Services, said the situation was difficult to believe when officials arrived.
“It was unreal," Davis said. “You had to kind of be there and take pictures to say this was real.”
How the snake was removed
Getting the snake out proved to be almost as difficult as discovering it.
The cottonmouth was reluctant to leave its hiding place inside the helmet. Animal control officers eventually submerged the helmet in water to force the snake out, allowing them to safely remove it with tongs. The animal was later released in a wooded area away from the school.
Cottonmouths, also known as water moccasins, are venomous pit vipers and are among the dangerous snakes found in Arkansas. They often seek dark, sheltered spaces, which may explain why the helmet provided an appealing hiding spot.
The unusual incident was particularly concerning because the player had no idea what was inside his helmet while he was wearing it.
Player returned to practice
After the snake was removed, the player was given another helmet and continued practicing.
The incident did, however, prompt the coaching staff to remind players to inspect their equipment before putting it on. Helmets, bags and other gear that sit outside or remain undisturbed can provide shelter for insects, rodents and other animals.
The latest reports confirm that the player was unharmed and that the cottonmouth was safely relocated. There have been no reports of further incidents involving the snake or the football team.
For the player, what began as an ordinary practice became an encounter that could have ended very differently. The next time he puts on his football helmet, a quick inspection will probably be part of his routine.
