THE father of the teenage boy from the north-eastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, who was allegedly abducted by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) personnel recently and returned later, has alleged that he was tortured by the Chinese.

The boy was reunited with his family on Monday (31) evening.

Indian Army officials reunited Miram Taron with his parents at an event in Tuting in Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh on Monday (31) evening, Shaswat Saurabh, the district’s deputy commissioner said.

He was accorded a warm welcome by the local administration on returning home.

The 17-year-old Miram was allegedly abducted by the Chinese armed officials on January 18 near the Line of Actual Control between the two countries when he went on a hunting trip with his friend Johny Yaying. The latter managed to escape from the scene and informed the authorities about the matter.

The Chinese personnel handed over the youth to the Indian side on January 27 at the Wacha-Damai interaction point at Kibithu in Anjaw district of Arunachal where he served quarantine and completed legal procedures.

Miram’s father Opang Taron said his son was mentally jaded as the entire incident shocked him. He claimed that his son was also beaten up by the Chinese personnel.

“He is still in shock. He was kicked in the back and given a mild electric shock initially. He was kept blindfolded most of the time and his hands were tied during captivity. They untied him only when it was time to eat or relieve himself. But, they provided him with adequate food,” Taron told reporters at the event.

Tapir Gao, a parliamentarian of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party who is from Aruanchal, said Miram was given a warm welcome by the villagers, officials and the local administrative leaders.

In September 2020, the PLA had allegedly captured five boys from the state’s Upper Subansiri district before releasing them after about a week, also at a border point in Anjaw district.

Arunachal Pradesh shares a 1,080 kilometre-long boundary with China which also claims the state to be its own.
