TELEVISION’S Emmy nominations for 2024 highlighted FX’s dominance, particularly with its standout series “Shogun” and “The Bear,” each breaking records with an unprecedented number of nods. “Shogun,” adapted from James Clavell’s renowned historical fiction novel, earned an impressive 25 nominations.
The series immerses viewers in early 17th-century Japan, intricately weaving together the deadly court politics of feudal society with a remarkable portrayal of Japanese culture. Despite its heavy use of subtitles, which can sometimes deter viewers, “Shogun” received widespread acclaim for its authenticity and compelling storytelling.
Lead actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, who play pivotal roles in “Shogun,” expressed gratitude and humility at their nominations. Sanada remarked, “It was a great opportunity to share our culture with the world. I hope this will be a stepping stone for the next generation,” highlighting the show’s broader cultural impact beyond its critical acclaim.
In the comedy categories, “The Bear” made headlines with its 23 nominations, setting a new record for most nominations in a single year for a comedy series. The show, set in a bustling Chicago restaurant, blends humor with poignant family dynamics and visually stunning depictions of gourmet dishes. Despite its serious undertones addressing themes like grief and addiction, “The Bear” competes against lighter comedic fare such as “Hacks” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” showcasing its versatility and broad appeal.
Across the limited or anthology series section, “True Detective: Night Country” led the pack with 19 nominations. Starring acclaimed actress Jodie Foster, the series transported viewers to the rugged landscapes of Alaska, exploring dark crime narratives with intensity and depth. Foster herself earned a nomination for her compelling performance, further solidifying FX’s strong presence in this competitive category.
The Emmy nominations, announced in a live-streamed ceremony from Los Angeles, underscored FX’s stellar year in television production. Other notable FX productions receiving multiple nominations included “Fargo,” “Feud: Capote vs The Swans,” “Welcome to Wrexham,” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” reflecting the network’s diverse and high-quality content across different genres.
With final-round voting scheduled for mid-August, members of the US-based Television Academy have a month to review and assess the nominated series before the winners are revealed at the 76th Emmy Awards ceremony on September 15 in Los Angeles. The awards will honor outstanding achievements in television series broadcast between June 2023 and May 2024, marking a celebration of the best in contemporary television.
