THE Narendra Modi government has granted approval for the construction of 21 greenfield airports in the country, president Ram Nath Kovind said on Monday (31).

Among the new airports, the biggest one is coming up at Gautam Buddh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state which is going to elections starting February, he said in his address to the joint sitting of both houses of the parliament at the start of the budget session.

Last month, India’s minister of state for civil aviation VK Singh told the parliament that the civil aviation ministry has so far accorded ‘in-principle’ approval for setting up of 21 greenfield airports across the country.

The places are Mopa in the state of Goa, Navi Mumbai, Shirdi and Sindhudurg (Maharashtra), Kalaburagi, Bijapur, Hassan and Shimoga (Karnataka), Datia near Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh), Kushinagar and Jewar (Noida) in Uttar Pradesh, Dholera and Hirasar (Gujarat), Karaikal (Puducherry), Dagadarthi, Bhogapuram and Oravackal (Andhra Pradesh), Durgapur (West Bengal), Pakyong (Sikkim), Kannur (Kerala) and Hollongi (Itanagar) in Arunachal Pradesh, Singh said.

“A new airport is being set up at Hollongi, Itanagar. A modern new terminal has recently been opened at the Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Tripura. This development of the North East will prove to be a golden chapter in India’s growth story,” Kovind said in his speech.

The president also said that a new era of development in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh region has begun and commencement of international flights on Srinagar-Sharjah route is a part of this.
