India, EU look to enhance clean energy, climate partnership

INDIA and the European Union (EU) have agreed on a detailed work programme till 2023 to implement the 2016 EU-India Clean Energy and Climate Partnership with a focus on growing technical cooperation in the area of energy efficiency, renewable energy, green hydrogen and cooperation within the International Solar Alliance.

The talks took place during the EU-India Energy Panel meeting on Wednesday (1), India’s ministry of external affairs said in a statement.

The energy panel was co-chaired by the ministry’s secretary (west), Reenat Sadhu, and European Commission deputy director-general for energy Mechthild Worsdorfer.

“The Energy Panel agreed on increased technical cooperation in the area of energy efficiency, including on nearly zero energy buildings, smart readiness indicators for buildings; renewable energy, including floating solar, thermal solar and offshore wind; cooperation within the International Solar Alliance; green hydrogen; grid integration, including smart grids, storage, power market design, interconnection, cold chain, and sustainable financing,” the ministry said.

India and the EU will, as part of the strengthened cooperation, undertake new studies, study visits and joint workshops, exchanging knowledge and best practices on those areas.

The energy panel also agreed to jointly organise the India-EU offshore wind business and investment summit in the first half of next year with an exhibition of companies from Europe and India, B2B facilitation and sessions on reducing the cost of offshore wind and of financing it, Asian News International reported.

Both the sides decided to hold India-EU High-Level Platform on Smart Grid Replication, identifying possible opportunities and barriers for replicating and upscaling smart grid projects in India, it said.

The current India-EU climate and energy relations are guided by the India-EU Clean Energy and Climate Partnership as agreed at the India-EU Summit of March 2016 which aimed at reinforcing cooperation in clean-energy transition and implementation of the Paris Agreement.
