Here are news in brief related to India politics for Tuesday, August 30, 2022:

As many as 64 senior leaders of the Indian National Congress, including former Jammu and Kashmir deputy chief minister Tara Chand, have resigned from the party in support of veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad who quit the party last week. The Press Trust of India cited sources as saying that the leaders submitted their resignations to Congress president Sonia Gandhi. On Saturday (27), several political leaders from Jammu and Kashmir met Azad, who is planning to launch a new national party, a day after tendering resignations from all posts of Congress.

India’s opposition Indian National Congress on Tuesday alleged that several Chinese apps have siphoned off Rs 500 crore after duping lakhs of Indians through debt traps and prime minister Narendra Modi was sitting with his “eyes shut” as his government has no strategy to tackle them. Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh claimed an investigation between January and February 2021 found more than 1,100 digital loan apps available across play stores and that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) accepted that at least 600 such apps were operating illegally. “As per RBI, there was a jump of 12 times in loans on digital platforms between 2017 to 2020. Till now, 52 individuals in our country committed suicide due to blackmailing by these loan apps,” he told reporters.

Supporters of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday protested outside Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence in the Civil Lines area here over alleged malpractices in the Excise Policy 2021-2022. Carrying party flags, the protesters raised slogans against Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia. The police, however, stopped them from moving closer to the chief minister’s residence.  Leader of Opposition in Delhi assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and BJP parliamentarian from South Delhi Ramesh Bidhuri also took part in the protest.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday slammed the BJP following Gandhian activist Anna Hazare’s letter to him over his government’s liquor policy, alleging it was “using” the veteran since the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) found nothing in the probe involving his deputy Manish Sisodia, Press Trust of India reported.  He claimed the CBI has given an “informal clean chit” to Sisodia but may arrest him within a week or 10 days under political pressure. Earlier on Tuesday, Hazare on Tuesday wrote a letter to Kejriwal, slamming his government’s excise policy 2021-22 and said it seems the Delhi chief minister has “sunk into the addiction of power”.

With parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor contemplating running for the post of Indian National Congress president, the party on Tuesday said anybody who wants to contest can do so. PTI cited sources as saying that Tharoor is exploring the possibility of running for the post of the Congress president though he is yet to take a final call on it. They said he has not made up his mind but could take a call on it soon. Asked about it, Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh said, “I am not aware of anything like that but I understand that we announced our election schedule and given the dates of filing nomination, counting, and result.” Alleging that in the BJP, appointments depend on prime minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah, he said, “The Congress does not have a system where 1.5 people elect a 0.5 president.”
