India polls: At 61.2%, sixth phase sees lowest turnout among all phases

The Election Commission said the figures were approximate and would get updated.

THE sixth and penultimate phase of India’s general elections on Saturday (25) registered a voter turnout of 61.20 per cent — the lowest among all phases — as per the data complied till 11.45 pm on the day.

The turnout in the fifth phase was marginally higher at 62.20 per cent.

The Election Commission, however, said the figures were approximate and would get updated.

In the sixth phase, 58 seats in eight states and Union Territories across the country went to polls.

In the 2019 general elections, the turnout in the corresponding phase (59 seats across seven states went to polls) was 64.4 per cent.

According to the commission, the voter turnout in the fifth phase held on May 20 was recorded at 62.2 per cent.

The turnout in the fourth phase held on May 13 stood at 69.16 per cent, 3.65 percentage points higher than the corresponding phase in the 2019 parliamentary elections.

The voter-turnout figure for the third phase of polling on May 7 was 65.68 per cent.

In the third phase of the 2019 elections, the turnout was 68.4 per cent.

In the second phase of the 2024 elections held on April 26, the turnout was recorded at 66.71 per cent as against the 69.64 per cent in the second phase of the 2019 polls.

In the first phase of the ongoing general elections on April 19, a 66.14 per cent turnout was recorded. In the 2019 polls, the turnout in the first phase was 69.43 per cent.

The poll panel has said the final turnout will only be available after the results, with the counting of postal ballots and their addition to the total voting percentage.

The seventh and final phase of the election will be held on June 1 and the results will be announced on June 4.
