NALINI Joseph is aspiring to become the first Indian-American to become a member of the city council of Salisbury, a small coastal town and summer tourist destination in Massachusetts. Elections for the post are due in November.

The 53-year-old India-born businesswoman, came to the US after high school and attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, where she completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology. According to a report in the local Salisbury Post, Joseph calls herself a visionary who can see into the future of the coastal town – what it could be.

Speaking to the Post, she said she felt interested about a year ago in bettering the community with her skills and experience, which includes building non-profit organisations, managing budgets and personnel and collaborating with judges, etc. She now wants to bring those skills into play. Joseph considers public safety as a major concern for Salisbury at the moment and calls for supporting law enforcement, crime reduction and management of budget.

Her other points of concern include economic growth and a cleaner environment. She believes the city can be the next ‘silicon valley’ and attract talents.

Joseph came to Salisbury in 2011 and besides serving as the district administrator of the Guardian ad Litem program, also owns and runs Lini’s Mahal, a concierge chef business, and Lini’s Burgers. She also founded William Jones Scholars LLC, a non-profit educational organization for kids.
