Highlights:
- Jasprit Bumrah became the first Indian to play T20I cricket in 13 different countries, going past Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who were tied at 12
- The record came in India's Asian Games 2026 semifinal against Sri Lanka at Kōrogi Sports Park, Nisshin, Aichi-Nagoya, on October 1
- India posted 169/7 on the back of Ishan Kishan's unbeaten 80, then bowled Sri Lanka out for just 45 to win by 124 runs
- That 124-run margin is the biggest winning margin ever recorded in a men's T20I semifinal or final, beating India's own 96-run win in the 2026 T20 World Cup final
- Sri Lanka's 45 is also the joint-lowest total ever by a Test-playing nation in T20Is, level with West Indies' 45 against England in 2019
- Since Kohli and Rohit have already retired from T20Is, Bumrah's 13-country record now stands unchallenged by either of them
- The win sends India into the Asian Games final to face Pakistan for gold
India's cricket team didn't just win their Asian Games semifinal on Thursday — they buried Sri Lanka under a scoreline that barely looked like a contest. And somewhere in the middle of that demolition, Jasprit Bumrah quietly walked past two of Indian cricket's biggest names without needing to bowl a single ball to do it.
The moment Bumrah stepped onto the field at Kōrogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Aichi-Nagoya, he became the first Indian cricketer to play T20I cricket in 13 different countries. Japan was the new addition to a list that already included Australia, Bangladesh, England, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the UAE, the USA, the West Indies, and Zimbabwe — on top of India itself.
Before this match, Bumrah shared that record at 12 countries with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Japan tipped him past all three. And because Kohli and Rohit have both already walked away from T20I cricket, neither of them can add another country to catch back up — which means, for now at least, this record belongs to Bumrah alone.

A record-breaking thrashing to go with it
The individual milestone came inside a team performance that was just as lopsided. Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field first, and after India slipped to 87/4, Ishan Kishan single-handedly rebuilt the innings with an unbeaten 80 off just 46 balls, including four fours and five sixes, to take India to 169/7. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had also chipped in with 38 off 21 earlier in the innings.
Sri Lanka's reply never got going. Bumrah (2/7), Axar Patel (3/8), Abhishek Sharma (2/2), and Washington Sundar (1/18) ran through the batting line-up, bowling them out for a mere 45 runs in 9.5 overs, with five Sri Lankan batters failing to score at all.
The 124-run margin of victory was India's 11th 100-plus run win in men's T20I history, a world record for the format. It's also now the biggest winning margin ever seen in a men's T20I semifinal or final, surpassing India's own 96-run win over New Zealand in the 2026 T20 World Cup final. Sri Lanka's total of 45 further ties them with the West Indies, who were also bowled out for 45 by England in 2019, for the lowest T20I total by any Test-playing nation. It's exactly the kind of statement India wanted to make heading into the gold-medal match, with the semifinal barely feeling like a contest by the time it ended.

The records Jasprit Bumrah already holds
Wednesday's milestone adds to a list that's grown fairly long for a bowler still active in all three formats. Here's where Bumrah currently stands:
- Most countries played T20I cricket in (India): 13, ahead of Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar at 12 — set on October 1, 2026, in Japan
- Highest wicket-taker for India in T20 World Cup history: 33 wickets in 22 innings, breaking Ravichandran Ashwin's previous record of 32 wickets in 24 innings, achieved against South Africa in the 2026 T20 World Cup Super 8 stage
- T20 World Cup winner (2026): Part of the India side that beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at Narendra Modi Stadium, becoming the first team ever to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title; Bumrah took 4/15 in that final
- Player of the Tournament, 2024 T20 World Cup: 15 wickets at an economy rate of 4.17 as India won their second T20 World Cup title
- Highest winning margin in a men's T20I semifinal or final: 124 runs, set against Sri Lanka at the Asian Games on October 1, 2026, surpassing India's own 96-run win in the 2026 T20 World Cup final
- Most Test wickets in a calendar year: 71 wickets in 2024, the most by any bowler in a single year, at an average of 14.92
- Wisden's Leading Cricketer in the World (2024): Recognized for his record-breaking year across formats
- Test hat-trick: Took a hat-trick against the West Indies in 2019, becoming only the third Indian bowler to do so, after Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan
- India's only bowler to captain the T20I side: Led India in two T20Is during the 2023 tour of Ireland, winning both
- Test vice-captain: Has held the role since December 2023 and has captained India in Test matches on three occasions
For a bowler who's spent the last two years being talked about as the best in the world in his craft, Wednesday added a record that had nothing to do with wickets — and everything to do with how far, and how widely, his career has traveled.
