ENGLAND Test captain Joe Root, who hit a fifty and hundred in the drawn first Test against India at Trent Bridge recently, has now overtaken his Indian counterpart Virat Kohli in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings for batsmen.

Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, on the other hand, has returned to the top 10 among the Test bowlers. He made a comeback to the long format by taking nine wickets in the first Test after failing to impress in the World Test Championship final against New Zealand in June. Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who won the man of the series award against Australia in a Twenty20 series recently, returned to the No.1 slot in the T20 allrounders’ ranking.

Root, who scored 64 and 109 at Trent Bridge to gain 49 points, now occupies the fourth position while Kohli, who fell for a golden duck the only time he went out to bat in the match, was at No.5. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and two Australians Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne occupied the top three positions. At No.6, Rohit Sharma is the only other Indian batsman in the top 10.

In the bowling section, Bumrah took a big leap to become ninth following his 9 for 110 in Nottingham. It is the first time that the pacer found himself in the top 10 since late March. Veteran England seamer James Anderson, who took four wickets in the first innings of the first Test to go past Anil Kumble to become the third-highest wicket-taker in the red-ball format, went up to the seventh position from eighth. Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who missed the first Test, was at No.2 in Test bowlers’ ranking while Australian Pat Cummins was leading the list.

Among the batters, Ravindra Jadeja (36) and KL Rahul (56) – both of whom slammed fifties in the first Test – made advances in the rankings. In bowling, England pacer Ollie Robinson (46), who took a fifer at Trent Bridge, and Shardul Thakur (55) went up the rankings.

Shakib, who became the first cricketer to complete 1,000 runs and take 100 wickets in the T20s, was back to lead the all-rounders’ charts since 2017. He also leads the lot in the one-day internationals (ODIs) and is ranked fifth in Tests.

In T20 bowling, Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman gained 20 places to become the 10th ranked after picking up seven wickets in five outings against Australia. South African spinner Tabraiz Shasmi is leading the T20 bowlers’ list.

In team rankings, New Zealand were at No.1 in Tests and ODIs while England were leading the table in T20s.
