Spanish teen Carlos Alcaraz won a series of prolonged games in the just concluded US Open 2022 and now, he has announced that he would not withdraw from the group stage games of the Davis Cup which will be played between September 13 and 18.
The fans were not impressed as they wanted the Spaniard to take rest as he spent almost a day in the last two weeks playing in the US Open. However, one user wanted him to follow the footsteps of his senior compatriot Rafael Nadal who has helped Spain to win five Davis Cup titles.
Nadal was favourite to win this year's US Open in the absence of Novak Djokovic who did not take part owing to vaccination status but he failed to clear the fourth round, losing to the US's Frances Tiafoe.
Journalist Jose Morgado confirmed on social media that Alcaraz, who played three consecutive five-set matches towards the end of the tournament and a four-setter against Norway's Casper Ruud in the final, was set to play in the Davis Cup. He also said that Spain were scheduled to play in Valencia on Wednesday (14), Friday (16) and Sunday (18).
The other three cities hosting the group stage games of the tournament are Glasgow, Bologna, and Hamburg. The quarterfinals, semifinals and final will be held in another Spanish city of Malaga between November 21 and 27.
"Carlos Alcaraz confirms he WILL play the Davis Cup group stage in Valencia next week. Spain got matches on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Crazy... but tennis never stops," Morgado tweeted.
Fans were quick to react. While one said he should rest for at least two weeks after winning the US Open, another asked why he was putting so much pressure on his body and warned him to take a lesson from Nadal's injuries.
Here is what the fans said:

Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title on Sunday (11) when he defeated Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(1), 6-3 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in a battle that lasted almost three and half hours.
The US Open is the only Major in the last two decades to see champions other than the Big Three for three consecutive years. After Nadal won it in 2019, the title at Flushing Meadows went to Dominic Thiem in 2020 and Daniil Medvedev in 2021.
