Modi praises NRIs in US: ‘Our diaspora is our strength’

INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (22) commended the Indian Diaspora on his arrival in the US for an official visit, saying it has distinguished itself across the world. He said this after receiving a warm welcome from the community after landing in Washington for a major visit to boost India’s relations with the world’s only superpower.

The prime minister, who reached the US for the seventh time since taking office in 2014, was enthusiastically greeted by a group of Indian-Americans at the Joint Base Andrews who waited for Modi in the rain. He also had an interaction with the members of the community at the hotel in the US capital where he is staying.

“Grateful to the Indian community in Washington DC for the warm welcome. Our diaspora is our strength,” PM Modi said in a tweet along with pictures of his interaction with members of the Indian-American community.

“It is commendable how the Indian diaspora has distinguished itself across the world,” he said.

Modi says about strong ties with Afghanistan prior to US visit

Whenever he makes a foreign visit, Modi ensures that he has meeting sessions with the diaspora community. He has been a popular leader among the Indian diaspora, especially in the US where it constitutes more than 1.2 per cent of the country’s population. The community is increasingly playing an important role in American politics. Current vice president Kamala Harris is also an individual of Indian origin.

Modi is set to meet the top political leadership of the US and other Quad members like Japan and Australia as well as business leaders during his three-day visit to the US.
