Prime minister Narendra Modi will make a state visit to the US on June 22 following an invitation from president Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden, the White House said in a statement on Wednesday (10).

The Bidens will also host Modi for a state dinner.

This will be Modi’s eighth visit to the US since becoming the prime minister in 2014 but first state visit.

His last visit was in September 2021 when he took part in events in the United Nations General Assembly and the summit of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) leaders. It was not a full state visit.

“The upcoming visit will affirm the deep and close partnership between the United States and India and the warm bonds of family and friendship that link Americans and Indians together,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement while announcing the prime minister’s visit.

She said that Prime Minister Modi’s visit will strengthen two countries’ shared commitment to a free, open, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific and their shared resolve to elevate strategic technology partnership, including in defence, clean energy, and space.

“The leaders will discuss ways to further expand our educational exchanges and people-to-people ties, as well as our work together to confront common challenges from climate change, to workforce development and health security,” she added.

Last month, the US and India announced an initiative on critical and emerging technology — a plan to share advanced defence and computing technology.

Biden and Modi will “explore ways to strengthen India-US collaboration in pluri-lateral and multilateral fora, including in the G20. They would reflect on their shared vision for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific and discuss opportunities to expand and consolidate the Quad engagement,” the administration said.

Biden is expected to pay a visit to India in September to take part in the G20 leaders’ summit. India is currently holding the presidency of the G20 grouping.
