THE ongoing row over the controversial remarks that a now suspended member of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might now affect the sporting world.

According to one report, football fans from India who are keen to visit Qatar where the Fifa World Cup will be played later this year, may have to give up their plans as the Gulf nation is reviewing whether to process their applications post the row over Nupur Sharma’s remarks.

One of his friends shared the news on Twitter and said, “…Indian authorities feel at sea while india looses its grip on Arab world . Loose canon spokespersons of BJP have been doing this damage for years with the help of media. Ab Bhugto (now face it)”

Qatar has been among a number of Muslim nations that have condemned the remarks and also summoned the Indian envoy in Doha over the matter.

That the Gulf nation is reluctant to welcome Indians for the World Cup, at least as of now, became evident when an Indian football fan’s application for accommodation during the mega event (November 21- December 18) was rejected by the host nation.

When the individual made an enquiry via mail, he was told that the Qatari government is yet to decide whether to allow booking from India due to the “recent events”, the Free Press Journal reported recently.

The BJP suspended Sharma and expelled another member Naveen Kumar Jindal over his controversial remarks after the incident snowballed into a major row overseas.
