Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-serving monarch, passes away at 96

Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle near Aberdeen in Scotland on Thursday (8) afternoon, the Royal family has announced. She was 96.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said, “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

“The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Members of the royal family rushed to the queen’s bedside at Balmoral Castle where she was staying, after doctors became concerned for her health.

Queen Elizabeth II was Britain’s longest-serving monarch, having reigned for 70 years.

Her son, the Prince of Wales, succeeds her as the King, ruling over the UK and more than a dozen Commonwealth countries.
