A new set photo from SS Rajamouli’s upcoming epic Varanasi has surfaced online, drawing attention ahead of the film’s worldwide release in 2027.

According to reports from The Times of India, the image features a large blue-screen backdrop surrounded by sculpted rock formations and detailed pillars. The set is believed to be part of the Ugrabhatti caves sequence from the film.

The caves sequence had already generated curiosity after short glimpses appeared in the character posters of Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, as well as in the film’s trailer. The newly surfaced image now offers the first detailed look at the set.

The photograph was shared on social media on Tuesday (26). No cast members appear in the image, but it highlights the scale and detail of the production design.

Reports cited by the Times of India state that the Ugrabhatti caves sequence centers around Mata Chinnamasta Devi, a fierce Hindu goddess associated with self-sacrifice, transformation, and cosmic balance.

In Hindu mythology, Chinnamasta Devi is shown carrying her own severed head while offering her blood to her attendants.

Within the story of Varanasi, Mahesh Babu’s character is reportedly searching for the goddess’s divine blessing in order to defeat an ancient evil force.

The set photo also confirms the extensive use of blue screens across the production area. This indicates that the sequence will rely heavily on visual effects work in the final version of the film.

The scale of the set design has added to discussions surrounding the ambitious production of Varanasi.

Rajamouli had earlier traveled to the grasslands of Africa to film real-time footage of migratory animals for another sequence in the movie.

The director has also confirmed that IMAX cameras are being used during filming. One of the major sequences shot in IMAX reportedly includes a Ramayana battle scene.

Varanasi is produced by K.L. Narayana and S.S. Karthikeya under the banners Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business.

The film stars Mahesh Babu in the role of Rudhra. Priyanka Chopra plays Mandakini, while Prithviraj Sukumaran appears as Kumbha.

The music for the film is composed by MM Keeravani.

Varanasi is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027. The film will release in both standard and IMAX formats.

The latest set leak has increased interest in the film’s large-scale production and visual storytelling, especially the mysterious Ugrabhatti caves sequence that appears to play a major role in the story.
