INDIAN-AMERICAN political leader Vivek Ramaswamy recently appreciated an American author who told him that she would not have voted for him in this year’s presidential election because he is an “Indian”. He said in a post on microblogging site X later that he respected the author because “she had the guts to speak her mind”.

Son of Indian immigrant parents, the 38-year-old Ramaswamy was in fray for the Republican nomination for the November 5 election but quit the race early to endorse former president Donald Trump, who will take on incumbent president Joe Biden in a rematch of the 2020 poll.

The conversation where Ramaswamy, a billionaire entrepreneur, was told about his Indian identity by author Ann Coulter happened during his The Truth Podcast.

In his X post, Ramaswamy wrote, “Ann Coulter told me flat-out to my face that she couldn’t vote for me ‘because you’re an Indian,’ even though she agreed with me more than most other candidates. I disagree with her but respect she had the guts to speak her mind. It was a riveting hour. The TRUTH podcast is back.”

From the beginning of the talk, Coulter took swipes at the Indian-American leader.

“… Fantastic opening monologue. I too am a fan of yours. I am going to make a point to make it fun. You’re so bright and articulate. I guess I can call you articulate since you’re not an American black – can’t say that about them, it’s derogatory – I agree with many, many things you say probably more than most other candidates. But I still would not have voted for you because you’re an Indian,” she said.

Ramaswamy, who said the conversation between him and the author had some ‘interesting’ bits, also said on X, “Ann Coulter challenged me. I challenged her. This episode will challenge you. You’re not going to want to miss it,” he had posted on X.

After his withdrawal from the presidential race and endorsing Trump, speculation was rife that he could be the latter’s running mate if he won the election. However, it was reported in March that the mercurial former president decided not to make Ramaswamy his running mate and was instead considering him for a position in the cabinet, Bloomberg reported citing sources.

The report said that Trump informed Ramaswamy directly about his plan. He could offer the Indian-American the role of the homeland security secretary. Certain quarters close to Trump believe Ramaswamy could be a good fit for the role because of his strong public speaking skills and his immigrant background, the report added. Trump’s previous term had come under strong criticism for its stringent immigration policies and picking someone with the immigrant background might help in mitigating the criticism.
