In the epic Mahabharata, Pandava prince Yudhisthira had put his brothers and wife Droupadi at stake in a game of dice against the Kauravas led by the cunning Shakuni and she was left utterly humiliated in a crowded court after he had lost.
Recently, something similar happened in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in the 21st century India and this time, a woman bet herself while playing the game of Ludo, also played with dice, and lost to her landlord.
According to an India Today report, the woman, identified as Renu, put herself at stake after running out of money to bet on.
The report said that the woman has such an addiction of playing Ludo that she used to gamble with the money that her husband, who lives in Jaipur in the neighbouring state of Rajasthan, sent her.
Renu used to play the game with her landlord regularly and one day, she ended up putting herself at stake while playing as she ran out of all her money.
The incident was reported from Devkali locality in Nagar Kotwali in Uttar Pradesh.
She later told her husband about it and he filed a police complaint in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh. He also posted a post on the incident on social media.
According to the man, he used to live in a rented house in Devkali. Six months ago, he left for Rajasthan for work and sent money to his wife which she used in gambling. And when all her money got exhausted, she bet herself on Ludo and lost.
He also said that his wife has now started living with the husband and that he failed to convince her to leave him, the report added.
Police sources said that they were trying to get in touch with the man and will launch a probe as soon as possible.
The couple have two children.
