In what is considered a major transition in one of India’s prominent business families, Akash Ambani, the son of Mukesh Ambani, succeeded him as the chairman of Reliance Jio. The junior Ambani, a non-executive director at the telecom company, was appointed as the chairman of the board of directors. Ambani, 65, on the other hand, resigned from the Reliance Jio board.
Who is Akash Ambani?
Akash Ambani, the eldest son of Mukesh, was born on October 23, 1991, in Mumbai. He did his schooling from Dhirubhai Ambani International School and Campion School in Mumbai, named after his legendary grandfather and patriarch of the Reliance conglomerate. He then earned a major in Economics from Brown University in the US in 2014.
Akash married Shloka Mehta, daughter of Indian diamantaires Russell and Mona Mehta, in 2020 and the duo have a son named Prithvi. Akash has a twin sister Isha Ambani and a younger brother Anant Ambani.
The junior Ambani is known to be closely involved with the Reliance Group’s digital push. According to company sources, his elevation as the chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm is a recognition of the specific contributions that he made to the digital services and “rededicates him to even higher levels of responsibilities, going forward”, Indian news channel NDTV reported.
The technology enthusiast has also been closely associated with the invention and launch of the India-specs focused JioPhone five years ago, the company said. Akash has been in the forefront personally to lead the key acquisitions made by Jio in the digital domain over the last few years.
Akash, who was introduced to the board of directors, has been a key player in the development of the Jio 4G-LTE connection, which is a game-changer in India’s internet landscape.
He led the launch of Jio’s 4G services in India with his sister in 2015.
Akash is also a cricket enthusiast and is the co-owner of the popular Indian Premier League Cricket team Mumbai Indians.
