Wimbledon 2026: Poland's Iga Swiatek beats Karolina Pliskova, becomes third woman to reach grand slam

Iga Swiatek is trending in the United States after producing a dominant performance to reach the third round of Wimbledon 2026. The defending champion defeated former Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 6-3 in just 69 minutes, reminding fans why she remains one of the favorites to win another Grand Slam title.

The Polish star entered the match after surviving an emotional first-round battle against Taylor Townsend. That opening victory pushed her to three sets and left Swiatek in tears on Centre Court as she admitted the pressure of defending her Wimbledon title had affected her emotionally.

Two days later, however, she looked like a completely different player.

"I'm feeling more stable today - and that's good," Swiatek said after the victory.

"The first round was really emotional for sure, but today I felt like it was another day in the office and I needed to be ready, be in charge and make good decisions.

"It is always better when you're able to think like that and it was a good day for me. I was consistent and I had a good level of focus, so I'm really happy with my performance."

Swiatek wasted little time taking control of the match. She won 16 of the first 17 points and quickly raced to a 4-0 lead against Pliskova, the 2021 Wimbledon runner-up and former world No. 1.

Although Swiatek briefly struggled with her serve, including two double faults that allowed Pliskova to recover one break, she immediately regained control and wrapped up the opening set in only 25 minutes.

The second set proved more competitive. Pliskova broke serve early to take a 2-0 lead, but the Czech veteran was unable to build momentum. A costly double fault on break point allowed Swiatek back into the match, and another double fault later in the set handed the defending champion another crucial break.

From there, Swiatek won six of the final seven games to secure a convincing straight-set victory.

The six-time Grand Slam champion also received high praise from tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who rated her performance an "A+."

"When legends like that say nice things about you, it means a lot. It is basically why you try to be the best tennis player possible, so that people appreciate it.

"I don't know if it was an A+ because at times it was a tricky game. I felt like I played so many dirty shots in that final game especially, I wasn't able to control them that much. So maybe not A+, more like B, I would say."

The victory extended another remarkable milestone in Swiatek's career. She has now reached at least the third round in every Grand Slam tournament since the 2019 U.S. Open. She is also the only woman to advance to the third round at all 26 Grand Slam tournaments played during this decade.

Swiatek's strong showing has made her one of the biggest talking points of Wimbledon in the U.S., where the tournament continues to attract a large television audience. Her next challenge will be against rising Philippine star Alexandra Eala, who has emerged as one of the breakout players of this year's tournament.

With confidence restored and her title defense gaining momentum, Swiatek has once again established herself as one of the players to beat at Wimbledon 2026.
