RELIANCE Industries Limited chairman Mukesh Ambani, who is in charge of India’s biggest wireless carrier Reliance Infocomm, on Wednesday (8) said the country should roll out 5G telecommunications as a priority besides ensuring that devices become more affordable.

Speaking at the three-day Indian Mobile Congress which was inaugurated in New Delhi the same day, Ambani stressed on India’s digital revolution to say, “India must complete the migration from 2G to 4G to 5G at the earliest.”

He also added that “to keep millions of Indians at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid confined to 2G is to deprive them of the benefits of the digital revolution”.

“At Jio, we are currently focused on 4G and 5G execution, and broadband infrastructure expansion,” Ambani, who is also Asia’s richest man with a net worth of $92.7 billion, said.

On an earlier occasion, he had said that Jio, which counts Alphabet’s Google, Facebook, Qualcomm and Intel among its backers, is confident of becoming the first to launch 5G services in India, Reuters reported.

Jio has also developed a homegrown 5G solution as part of its technology push.

Google, which invested $4.5 billion in Jio’s parent Jio Platforms last year, has also said that it will help the wireless carrier with tech solutions as it plans to start 5G services.

In November, Reliance launched a low-cost 4G device jointly developed with Google, priced at $86 as part of a plan to woo first-time smartphone buyers.
