Anti-Prophet remarks: Dutch leader Geert Wilders backs Nupur Sharma, says she spoke truth

WHILE the controversy around the anti-Islam remark of Nupur Sharma, a member of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) refuses to die down and the country’s diplomatic circle finds a major challenge in hand to protect its rapport with the Muslim world, the suspended leader has found solidarity from a foreign politician.

Geert Wilders, leader of the Netherlands’ Party of Freedom and a member of that country’s House of Representatives, has slammed the Arab world for condemning Sharma’s remarks and said that she had spoken truth about Muhammad.

In a tweet, the 58-year-old Dutch politician questioned why India should apologise, saying, “It is ridiculous that Arab and Islamic countries are angered by Indian politician Nupur Sharma for speaking the truth about Prophet Muhammad who indeed married Aisha when she was six years old and consumed the marriage when she was nine. Why does India apologize?”

He also advised India that it should not be intimidated by the Islamic countries, adding that appeasement would only make things worse. According to him, India should defend Sharma, who has complained about getting death threats and was extended a security cover by the police in Delhi.

“Appeasement never works. It’ll only make things worse. So, my dear friends from India, don’t be intimidated by islamic countries. Stand up for freedom and be proud and steadfast in defending your politician Nupur Sharma, who spoke the truth about Muhammad,” Wilders said in another tweet.

Wilders was set to speak to an Indian television channel on the issue on Tuesday (7). He announced that in another tweet and said, “India can only be proud and supportive to a politician who dares to speak the truth about Muhammad.”

The BJP suspended Sharma, one of its national spokespersons, besides expelling Naveen Kumar Jindal, media head of its Delhi unit, over the derogatory remarks. allegedly made against prophet Muhammad.

A number of countries in the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Iran and others, witnessed backlash against the remarks and some of them even summoned the Indian envoys posted on their soil. Some also appreciated the BJP for taking a strong step against the duo.
