Azim Premji India’s ‘most generous’ billionaire once again

WIPRO founder Azim Premji has emerged as India’s “most generous” philanthropist billionaire for the second consecutive year as he topped the Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2021, leaving behind the likes of Shiv Nadar, Mukesh Ambani, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Nandan Nilekani and Gautam Adani.

The 76-year-old Premji made a total donation of Rs 9,713 crore (£946 million) in Fiscal Year 2021, which comes to around Rs 27 crore (£2.6 million) a day. His contribution has gone up by nearly a fourth.

Nadar of HCL Technologies is a distant second with Rs 1,283 crore (£125 million); Ambani of Reliance Industries at three with Rs 577 crore (£56 million); Birla of Aditya Birla Group at number four with Rs 377 crore (£37 million); Nilekani of Infosys at five with Rs 183 crore (£18 million); Hinduja Family of the Hinduja Group at six with Rs 166 crore (£16 million); Bajaj Family of Bajaja Group at seven with Rs 136 crore (£13 milion); Adani of Adani Group and Anil Aggarwal of Vedanta at eight with Rs 130 crore (£12.6 million) and Dabur India’s Burman Family at 10 with Rs 114 crore (£11 million).

Besides, nine women also found place in the rankings with Rohini Nilekani of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies leading with Rs 69 crore (£6.7 million); Leena Gandhi Tewari of USV at Rs 24 crore (£2.3 million) and Anu Aga of Thermax at Rs 20 crore (£2 million).

Most people on the list were from Mumbai (31 per cent), followed by Delhi (17 per cent) and Bangalore (10 per cent).
