INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi is known to be a tough taskmaster and expects members of his government and ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to lead by example.

On Tuesday (7), Modi’s fellow members of parliament (MPs) got to see the hard disciplinarian in the former when he emphasised on the members’ attendance in the parliament, cautioning that if they did not change themselves, they could be changed with time, sources told Press Trust of India.

Modi uttered the strong words at the BJP parliamentary party meeting at the Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi, the sources added.

Revealing details of the meeting which was held for the first time outside the parliament complex, Indian parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Johsi said Modi told the party’s parliamentarians that all of them should organise sports competitions in their respective constituencies.

He also asked them to attend the parliamentary proceedings regularly and remarked that when children are told about an issue again and again, they don’t repeat it. He warned the members of parliament that they should mend ways fast or could face the consequences in due course.

Modi has flagged the poor attendance of BJP MPs in the parliament in the past also.

BJP president JP Nadda also advised grassroots leaders of the party to intensify their public relations exercise.

The BJP currently has more than 300 members in the 543-member Lok Sabha or lower house of the parliament, and 97 members in the Rajya Sabha or upper house of the parliament.
