BRITISH prime minister Boris Johnson was set to face a no-confidence motion on Monday (6) evening in the governing Conservative Party, Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 Committee which oversees the party’s leadership changes, told lawmakers.

To trigger the motion, 15 per cent of the Conservative lawmakers (or 54 of the current 360 Tory members of parliament) are required to write letters to Brady. On Monday, he said the threshold had been reached.

“The threshold of 15% of the parliamentary party seeking a vote of confidence in the leader of the Conservative Party has been exceeded,” he wrote in a note to Conservative lawmakers, The Guardian reported.

‘I’d do it again’: Johnson ahead of no-confidence vote

“In accordance with the rules, a ballot will be held between 1800 and 2000 today Monday 6th June — details to be confirmed. The votes will be counted immediately afterwards. An announcement will be made at a time to be advised,” it added.

The voting was set to take place between 6 pm and 8 pm London time on Monday.

Last month, a report into several high-profile Covid-19 lockdown-violating parties at Johnson’s office and residence was released, triggering calls for a confidence vote.

Johnson will need to bag the support of at least 50 per cent of all Tory MPs plus one, totalling 180. If he manages to do that, he will be theoretically safe from such a challenge though the rules can be changed.

Johnson, 57, became the prime minister in July 2019 replacing Theresa May.
