Vicky Kaushal’s highly anticipated historical action drama Chhaava has finally hit the big screens, bringing to life the fearless Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Directed by Laxman Utekar and backed by Maddock Films, the film has been creating buzz with its grand visuals, intense battle sequences, and stellar performances. While Kaushal delivers a powerful act, it’s Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb who truly leaves an impact, making Chhaava a gripping cinematic experience.

The film opens with the Mughal empire celebrating the death of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, believing that the Marathas are now weakened. However, their joy is short-lived as Sambhaji Maharaj (Vicky Kaushal) emerges as an even greater force against Aurangzeb. The movie traces his fearless journey, highlighting his undefeated battles, strategic brilliance, and eventual betrayal that led to his tragic demise.
Kaushal, known for his dedication to intense roles, fully immerses himself in the character of Sambhaji Maharaj. His screen presence, dialogue delivery, and action sequences elevate the film. Rashmika Mandanna, portraying his wife, delivers a decent performance, though her dialogue delivery could have been stronger. However, the real surprise is Akshaye Khanna, who effortlessly dominates every scene as Aurangzeb. His expressions, body language, and menacing aura make him the standout performer. Ashutosh Rana also adds weight to the narrative, while Diana Penty, in a brief role, doesn’t contribute much.

Laxman Utekar's direction brings Chhaava to life with stunning cinematography, well-crafted action scenes, and detailed period costumes. The film’s production design does justice to the historical setting, creating an immersive experience. The dialogues are impactful, though the film's runtime feels slightly stretched. The background score complements the intensity but could have been more powerful. The climax, however, is an emotional high point, leaving audiences speechless.
On social media, fans are divided. While many praise the film as a visual spectacle with strong performances, others feel that the first half lacks emotional depth. Some viewers believe Chhaava is Bollywood’s first big hit of 2025, with Kaushal delivering a "fire" performance and Khanna giving "goosebumps-worthy" moments. Others argue that despite a powerful second half, the film has loopholes that hold it back from being a true masterpiece.
Chhaava is a solid historical drama that blends action, drama, and emotion. While not perfect, it succeeds in bringing a lesser-explored chapter of Maratha history to the forefront. Vicky Kaushal proves his mettle once again, but Akshaye Khanna’s commanding presence elevates the film to another level. If you enjoy epic war dramas, this one is worth watching.
