Bollywood actor Tusshar Kapoor has allegedly become the latest target of an extortion threat, after a caller claiming to represent the Lawrence Bishnoi gang demanded $580,000 from him. The incident has raised fresh concerns about threats against members of the film industry, although investigators suspect the call may have been a hoax.
According to police sources, the caller introduced himself as "Harry Boxer", an alleged member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, and demanded money from the actor.
Tusshar reportedly alerted Mumbai Police immediately after receiving the threat. The complaint, lodged around a week ago, was subsequently handed over to the Anti-Extortion Cell and the Mumbai Crime Branch for investigation.
However, what initially appeared to be another threat linked to the notorious gang has taken a different turn, with preliminary investigations raising questions about the caller's identity.
Voice analysis raises doubts over caller's identity
Mumbai Crime Branch investigators examined the audio recording of the alleged extortion call and compared it with official voice samples of Harry Boxer available in their database.
According to senior police sources, the voices did not match. Investigators also compared the recording with other available audio samples of the alleged gang member and reportedly found no similarities.
The preliminary findings have strengthened suspicions that the caller may have been falsely using the name of Harry Boxer and the Lawrence Bishnoi gang to intimidate the actor into paying the demanded amount.
Police are now working to establish who made the call, where it originated and whether the individual deliberately invoked the gang's name to make the threat appear credible.
Another Bollywood celebrity targeted amid gang-linked threats
The incident comes weeks after Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff was targeted in a shooting incident in Mumbai, which was allegedly claimed by individuals linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
The latest threat to Tusshar has once again brought attention to the security concerns surrounding Bollywood personalities and the use of organised gang names to demand money from high-profile individuals.
The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has been linked to several threats and violent incidents involving celebrities and other prominent personalities. However, investigators are yet to establish any direct connection between the gang and the caller who contacted Tusshar.
No FIR registered as investigation continues
Despite the complaint, police sources said no First Information Report (FIR) had been registered in the case so far.
The Mumbai Crime Branch is continuing its investigation to identify the caller and determine whether the extortion demand was part of a wider operation or an attempt by an individual to exploit the gang's reputation.
For now, the suspected impersonation has become a key focus of the investigation, with authorities working to establish the authenticity of the threat and trace those responsible.
