PUNJABI singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh addressed criticism of his alcohol-themed songs by proposing a challenge to state governments during a concert in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
“If all states declare themselves dry states, I'll stop singing songs on alcohol from the very next day,” he stated on Sunday, adding that he would take a pledge to refrain from such lyrics if liquor shops across India were shut.
The remarks came after the Telangana government issued a notice ahead of his Hyderabad concert, asking him to avoid songs referencing alcohol, drugs, or violence.
In response, Dosanjh adjusted the lyrics of popular tracks like "Lemonade" and "5 Taara," replacing references to alcohol with alternatives like "Coke" and "hotel."
Acknowledging Gujarat’s prohibition policy, the singer remarked, “There’s some good news: Gujarat is a dry state. I didn’t get any notice today, and I won’t sing about alcohol.”
Dosanjh also expressed frustration with criticism directed at him, pointing out that many Bollywood songs promote alcohol, while his repertoire includes numerous devotional tracks.
He also offered a solution to authorities: “Declare a dry day on the same day I have my concerts, and I won’t sing any alcohol-themed songs.”
The ongoing “Dil-Luminati India Tour 2024” will conclude in Guwahati on December 29.
