Ranbir Kapoor has earned special praise from his mother-in-law Soni Razdan, who says she has been struck by how involved he is as a father and how strongly he supports his wife, Alia Bhatt.
In an exclusive conversation with CNN News18 Showsha, Soni reflected on how parenting has changed across generations. While comparing her own experience with the way families approach raising children today, she said modern parents appear more patient, involved and willing to share responsibilities.
“I feel parents of today, this generation, seem to me to be far more patient, far more evolved as parents, and far more able to somehow manage."
For Soni, Ranbir is a particularly noticeable example of that change.
“Fathers are, I’m sometimes gobsmacked when I see the way fathers are. Anshuman, what a wonderful dad he is. My son-in-law, what a wonderful father he is. You know, and he’s such a support to Alia. So I can see that, and even my husband is the same."
Her comments offer a glimpse into how she views the parenting dynamic within her family, while also highlighting a broader generational shift she believes has taken place.
Why Soni thinks fathers are more involved now
According to Soni, parenting in her generation was not necessarily treated as an equally shared responsibility between mothers and fathers.
“In my generation, taking out that maximum amount of time for your children was not really looked upon as some sort of virtue. It just wasn’t given that importance. It was almost like parenting was either dumped on the woman, or I don’t think parenting was shared as much as it is today."
She sees that change as one of the most positive developments in modern family life.
“And I think that is the best part of today’s generation. They really know how to share parenting, which makes all the difference."
Soni also said her husband has come to recognize how parenting responsibilities were handled differently in the past.
“You know, he is realising perhaps how little he actually gave to his children. And at that time, he had the excuse, ‘I was working very hard.’ But everybody is working very hard now. So, haan, it was just not that."
‘It has gotten a lot better’
For Soni, the transformation is not necessarily about today's parents having fewer responsibilities. Instead, she believes the importance attached to parenting itself has changed.
“It was not given that importance. I don’t know why. Some things get better with generation, some don’t."
She ultimately sees parenting as one area where the newer generation has made meaningful progress.
“In the sphere of parenting though, it has gotten a lot better."
Soni will next appear in Om Ka Hari, which is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18. But for now, it is her candid comments about Ranbir, Alia and modern fatherhood that are drawing attention.
